About the place

The church appears in the papal tithe lists of 1333–1334, and excavations in 2002–2005 suggest a stone church stood here as early as the 12th century. It was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century. The buttressed tower was built in 1677–1683 and bears the year 1680. The old church was pulled down and the present one was built between 1795 and 1805 with its stones; the tower was raised in 1823.

At the foot of the tower are two round-arched Romanesque doorways; one leads to the crypt of the Sándor family. A covered wooden staircase leads up to the church. Its Gothic altarpiece of 1510–1520 is now in Budapest. On the afternoon of the Saturday before Pentecost a Mass for the Csángós is held here, and hundreds of pilgrims, mostly Csángós from Moldavia, spend the night in the church.
