About the place

Șumuleu Mic hill (Kissomlyó) has three chapels: the Salvator Chapel, St Anthony's and the Chapel of the Suffering Jesus. The Salvator Chapel has a single nave and a square chancel and was probably built in the second half of the 15th century; Franciscan tradition links it to the victory at Belgrade in 1456. It was enlarged in 1678 and the main altar dates from 1679. The wooden ceiling has coffers painted around 1800 with apostles and saints.

Pilgrims climb to the chapel along the Way of the Cross, called Jézus-hágó. In front of the door stands a stone cross raised in 1876 by the faithful of Joseni, in memory of a victory in 1567. On the Saturday before Pentecost the pilgrimage Mass is held in the saddle between Șumuleu Mic and Șumuleu Mare.

Good to know

  • The climb is on foot; wear comfortable shoes.
  • Chapel opening hours are not published on the Franciscans' website; ask at the friary.
  • The altar in the saddle is a 1996 structure; the Pentecost Mass is held there.
