It is one of the few 18th-century buildings left in the town centre.
About the place
Until 1751 the Catholics of Miercurea Ciuc belonged to the parish of Cioboteni. In 1751 the town got its own parish, and the church was finished in 1758 on the western edge of the old market square. It was consecrated in 1784 to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and was surrounded by a wall. The interior was painted in 1933.
The parish keeps a crucifix from around 1470, from the time of King Matthias Corvinus. Next to the old church stands the Millennium Church, built to plans by the architect Makovecz Imre and consecrated in 2003. Today most Sunday Masses are held in the new church.
Good to know
- Masses in the old church are early: at 6:30 and 7:00 on weekdays and at 7:00 on Sundays.
- See also the Millennium Church next door, one of Makovecz Imre's buildings in Transylvania.
- Grand Caffé is about 250 m away on the same street.
