About the place

The parish appears in the papal tithe lists of 1332–1333. A Gothic church from 1498 stood on this site and was enlarged in the 17th century. Today's church was built in the mid-18th century; a plaque inside records the year 1756. The old tower was kept and raised, with a Baroque spire and a sundial that was rediscovered during the 1993 restoration.

The high altar dates from 1780, and the side altars of St John of Nepomuk and St John the Baptist, from 1776 and 1775, were paid for by Armenian merchants of the Lukács family. The Baroque pulpit carries statues of the four Fathers of the Church and the Evangelists. The neo-Gothic organ was donated in 1877 by Bishop Mihály Fogarasy, who was born in the town. A wall from 1756 surrounds the church, and next to it stands the old parish house of 1758.
