It is the best-known monument around Gheorgheni, with more than 1,500 Google reviews, and it reopened to the public in 2022.
About the place
The castle grew out of a 15th-century manor of the Lázár family. An inscription with the year 1532 can be seen in the gate passage. Between 1629 and 1632, István Lázár surrounded the buildings with a wall of about 100 by 75 m, with corner bastions and decorative battlements. According to tradition, Gabriel Bethlen, later Prince of Transylvania, spent part of his childhood here.
The castle burned in 1707, 1748 and 1872 and was then abandoned. It was partly restored from the 1970s onwards, and from 2013 it was closed because of a dispute over ownership. Since 2022 it has been open to the public again as a museum and event venue; the owners are descendants of the Lázár family.
