A short walk shows you what the merchants' town looked like between the 18th and 20th centuries.
About the place
Piața Libertății (Szabadság tér) was the town's market square. Its present look took shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the craftsmen's low houses were replaced by two-storey buildings with shops on the ground floor; the ensemble is a listed monument. There is a park in the middle, and at number 25 stands the Reformed church, built between 1895 and 1899.
Strada Márton Áron leads from the square to St Nicholas Church. Here stand old houses of Armenian families: the Czárán house, from the 17th–18th centuries, at number 7, and the houses at numbers 10, 12 and 14, from the 18th–19th centuries. One of them, the Bocsánczy house of 1733, has a wrought-iron window grille dated 1841.
Good to know
- Start from the square and walk along Strada Márton Áron to St Nicholas Church and the museum: everything is a few minutes apart.
- The cafés, the pastry shop and the restaurants of the centre are on the square and the streets around it.
- For a green walk, Csiky Garden, a 16-hectare arboretum planted between 1884 and 1910, lies in the north-east of town, about 2 km away.
