It is regarded as the oldest monument in town and was restored in 2021.
About the place
Most art historians date the chapel to the 13th century, in late Romanesque style. The archaeologist Mariana Beldie, who excavated here in 1973, suggested the second half of the 16th century, based on a coin from 1561. Similar round chapels stand in Gheorgheni (St Anne) and Sânzieni (St Stephen). The first written mention dates from 1613, in an account of the Easter procession.
Inside, four metres up, is a painted coffered ceiling, a copy of the original from 1677, which was removed in 1903. The enclosure wall bears the year 1771 above the gate, and the hermit's house beside the wall dates from 1830. Restoration was completed in 2021 and the chapel reopened on the feast of the Sacred Heart.
