About the place

The resort grew up around its mineral springs, most probably in 1842. The Mikes spring is named after Count Mikes Benedek, who chaired the spa company from 1866 and commissioned the first scientific analyses of the waters in 1868. The carbonated, salty and iron-rich waters are used for baths and drinking cures in the treatment centres.

The marked path starts in the centre, passes the Mikes and Apor springs and enters the forest. After about 10 minutes the red-dot trail climbs to the left to the Apor bastion (Apor-bástya), at about 760 m. Baron Apor Károly had it built in 1883 as a lookout; since 2017 it has housed a small exhibition on the resort's history. You can come back by the Ludmilla viewpoint, past Hotel Ciucaș.

Good to know

  • At the fork in the forest, the red dot leads to the Apor bastion and the red cross towards Lake Sfânta Ana.
  • The whole loop, up to the bastion and back by the Ludmilla viewpoint, takes about an hour.
  • In the evening the bastion is lit up and can be seen from the resort.
