About the place
The crag is a nature reserve of about 1.5 hectares on the eastern slope of the Pilisca volcanic cone. Its andesite towers rise 50–60 m above a forest of spruce, fir and beech. The reserve protects an endemic yellow flower, Teleki's hawkweed (Hieracium telekianum).
From the top you can see the resort, Lake Ciucaș, the Ciomatu mountains and the Olt gorge towards Bixad. The viewpoint is marked by a wooden cross. There are traces of an old watchtower on the rock, according to Hungarian Wikipedia.
Good to know
- The trail, marked with a red triangle, starts next to the football pitch and climbs steeply in switchbacks; wear good shoes.
- Bears live in the area: do not go up after sunset, according to Visit Harghita.
- You can walk a loop: from the bridge over the Olt by Lake Ciucaș, past the campsite and the mofette, through the forest to the reserve entrance, then back to the bridge.
