Why it's on the list

It is the best-known sight around the resort: a lake that formed at the bottom of an extinct volcano's crater.

About the place

The lake formed in one of the two twin craters of the Ciomatu massif; the Mohoș bog fills the other. The water surface lies at 949–950 m. The lake has no springs and is fed only by rain and melting snow. Measurements in 1999–2000 gave it about 19 hectares, and its maximum depth today is 6–7 m. On the shore stands the Saint Anne chapel, where Catholic pilgrims come every year on Saint Anne's day.

Visits are run by the Pro Sfânta Ana (Pro Szent Anna) association from Lăzărești. You buy the ticket at the Knowledge Centre next to the car park or online; it also covers the Mohoș bog and the centre's exhibition. Swimming has been banned since December 2017, but you can take a rowing boat or an electric pontoon on the lake.
