It is the lake that gives the resort its name, with a drowned forest whose trunks are still visible.
About the place
The lake formed in 1837 or 1838, when scree on the north-western slope of Mount Ghilcoș slid into the valley and dammed the streams. Sources give different causes: very heavy rain or the earthquake of January 1838. The fir forest in the valley was flooded, and its trunks still rise from the lake. The name comes from the Red Stream (Pârâul Roșu), coloured by iron oxides; in Hungarian the lake is called Gyilkos-tó.
The lake lies at 983 m. Measurements in 1987 gave about 11.5 ha and a perimeter of 2,830 m. The streams keep bringing in sediment, so the lake is slowly filling up. It belongs to the Cheile Bicazului-Hășmaș National Park, and boats can be rented at the landing from May to September.
Good to know
- Boats are rented at the landing in season (May–September), according to the park administration.
- Fishing is allowed only from the shore, with a fishing permit and the fee paid to the park administration; fishing from boats is banned.
- The Bicaz Gorge starts about 4 km down the valley on the DN12C; most of it lies in Neamț County.
