It is the only via ferrata in the Red Lake area and climbs straight up the crag above the resort.
About the place
The route was built in autumn 2016 by the Dancurás mountain rescue team from Gheorgheni and is named after a local climber, Wild Ferenc. It has 200 m of cable and 173 m of ascent, with a hard D-grade section before the suspension bridge. The approach takes about 20 minutes, the climb more than 50 minutes and the walk down about 30 minutes.
Access is free, according to Visit Harghita, but you need a helmet, harness and via ferrata set. The minimum age is 14, and the route is not for beginners.
Good to know
- Start near the Turist hotel on the blue-triangle trail and follow the wooden “Wild Ferenc” signs.
- If you lack experience, go with a guide: Visit Harghita lists guided tours with equipment included.
- Do not climb in the rain: wet limestone gets slippery.
