It is the classic climb from the resort: in just over an hour you see the whole lake from above.
About the place
The trail marked with a blue triangle starts in the resort centre, crosses the bridge over the Bicaz and climbs past Vila Bucur, the first tourist building in Lacu Roșu, built in 1926. It continues on a gravel road to the Suhard hut, then on a path below the south face to the Suhard saddle. It is about 3 km long with 378 m of ascent, roughly 1¼ hours up, and can be walked all year, according to the park administration.
From the saddle, the last 400 m climb steeply through the forest to the summit plateau. From there you see the resort, the Valea Oii arm of the lake and the surrounding peaks. The Wild Ferenc via ferrata also climbs the south face.
Good to know
- From the Suhard saddle you can take a detour of about 25 minutes on an unmarked path to Suhardul Mare (1,504 m).
- The summit plateau ends in a sheer drop: keep children close.
- With some luck you may see chamois, the park administration writes.
